Short, simple poems for our time

Comeuppance

Did you not see it coming, for we all did
Spare me your vacant, pleading stare
Your skin and sclera yellowing like Bohemian pearls
Were you completely unaware
That actions have consequences

Your supercilious sneer and your indifference
Did it ever cross your mind
To hedge against life's pitfalls and it's unexpected twists
And not be quite so unkind
To those less fortunate than yourself

If I thought that your downfall was somewhat unjust
I would offer you solace
But the harms we inflict and wrongs that we do
Can so quickly befall us
And your virtues are vanishingly few

But I will fund you a bed for the night
And I'll buy you another beer
For I would hate to think that I, like you
Would turn a deaf ear
To a soul in such obvious distress
