Short, simple poems for our time

Decisions

We all try our best in this baffling old world
To determine what's wrong and what's right
But most of the time it goes badly awry
For the truth is, we're just not that bright

The average person's endowed, it would seem
With a brain that's not fit for the charge
Of selecting which path he should take, so I fear
That the omens are bad, by and large

Add to that all those inherent failings we have
Such as envy, indifference and greed
That we manage to cope with the basics of life
in itself, is a wonder indeed

Evolution is still work in progress, my friend
It will take several billions of years
Before homos can claim to be sapient
And we won't have that long, it appears

It's a minefield out there, and I have to conclude
That old Darwin was right to contend
That the fittest will probably see out the course
But the rest will fall short of the end
