Short, simple poems for our time
Flashbacks
Unannounced and uninvited, dampened fires are re-ignited
Memories thought obliterated, now unleashed and re-instated
Delight and hurt in equal measure, nostalgic bliss or deep displeasure
Routine rudely interrupted, normal service now disrupted
Sometimes agreeable, often less so, a sweet or bitter intermezzo
in natures mad contrary drama, paroxysms of joy and trauma
Nature offers no protection, no time out for circumspection
Each recall must be contended, in an instant, apprehended
An anti-virus would be needed, WARNING “Not to be proceeded”
Distress and pain contained therein, consigned to the recycle bin
But recollections can't be screened, or harmful flash-backs quarantined
We can't control our neural notions, neutralise our raw emotions
Risks and threats must be assessed, dealt with, filtered, laid to rest
Then vigilant but apprehensive, we contemplate the next offensive
