Short, simple poems for our time
Gastrotherapy
Light bulbs, ploughs, the wheel, computers
Penicillin and TV
Each has helped enhance our lives
In many ways you would agree
But it's surely my contention
If importance we should weigh
That the world's best invention
Is the tasty takeaway
Which things give us greatest pleasure,
music, dancing, art or sex,
exercise, the things we treasure?
Personal tastes are so complex
But to answer my own question
Most of us, I think, would say
It's the comfort of ingestion
That we'd plump for any day
To stay happy, it's been shown in
Lab research done on our brains
Dopamine and Serotonin
Must be surging through our veins
Hormones coming to the rescue
When Churchill's "black dog” is lurking
Life will get you down unless you
Get those old endorphins working
So when spirits need reviving
Don't resort to medication
Pay no heed to doctors orders
Ring the nearest eating station.
Adrenaline's the only answer
Just one forkful brings the rush
Mother Nature's life enhancer
Nothing pleases quite as much
Infinite delights await you
Pizzas, burgers or Chinese
Shish kebabs and spicy curries
Fish and Chips and mushy peas
Salads just don't cut the mustard
Processed food is what we crave
MSG will get the blood stirred
Minutes, in the microwave

I really couldn't give a fig
Which bits of chicken, cow or pig
Are ending up in the concoction
As long as larging up's an option
