Short, simple poems for our time
Mediocrity
I travelled the world, in the hope that I’d find
Something special, unique, and sublime
Put my fate in the hands of Dame Fortune, and hoped
she’d come up with the goods, in due time
But I’ve reached the conclusion, perverse though it sounds
That there’s nothing out there, of great note
Not a thing I expected to bring me delight
Has succeeded in floating my boat
But I’m equally sure, just to balance the books
That there’s nothing that makes me depressed
Life’s just pretty banal, unexciting and dull
Disappointing at best, I’d suggest
Some do say, I’m a difficult bugger to please
A demanding and fussy old churl
But it just seems existence is pretty mundane
Just a road to be travelled, that’s all
So, I’ll just carry on with the same daily drudge
And stop searching for things more alluring
Mediocrity’s fine, it’s quite safe and benign
And that’s something I find reassuring
Even so, if you feel, that I’m settling for less
than I should, and my outlook’s too gloomy
I hope that you find something special out there
But I’ve got what I need, that’ll do me
