Short, simple poems for our time
The Rules of Life
There's them that's smart and them that's not
No point in asking why
And folk with larger brains will get
A bigger slice of pie
Control and power lies in the hands
Of nimble-witted chaps
Who will ensure that those less bright
End up with just the scraps
But when religion held great sway
(Although it now sounds quaint)
The fear of ending up in hell
Engendered some restraint
And even bears of little brain
Would manage to survive
With handouts from the better-off
To keep their hopes alive
But now we know, the truth is out
This life is no rehearsal
You need some nous to stay on top
Now greed is universal
And so it's just a fact of life
Unless you're pretty shrewd
If your brain cells are precious few
You're well and truly screwed
