Short, simple poems for our time

Unreported Alien Visitation

We tried to bridge the species gap, that slimy thing and I
The mismatch in our types, to circumvent
I had spied it's silver spacecraft as the light began to fade
And approached with good intention from my tent

“Welcome friend” I shouted as our paths converged as one
I sought some reciprocation, but instead
It just screeched and gurgled something which I couldn't comprehend
And it had clearly no idea what I'd said

So I sensed a major problem in this first for creature-kind
In that we were too diverse in every way
Mutual dialogue proved futile, and we failed at every turn
Our undoubted good intentions to convey

Our communication skills were insufficient for the task
of uniting our life forms in common bond
I had hoped that something smart enough to make that epic trip
Would possess the basic skills to correspond

But we stood there making noises for an hour or two I'd say
When exasperated we gave up the fight
And it squelched it's way back up into it's shiny silver craft
As I looked on, deflated and contrite

So if you should have occasion to encounter such a ship
Don't expect an instant meeting of the mind
A giant step for each could be somewhat out of reach
Due to nature's range of infinite design
